The present study explores civil society organizations' (CSOs) civic and political potential in Turkey. For this purpose, it generates original data from Antalya and utilizes social network analysis to analyze the CSOs' cooperation structure. The analysis points out certain levels of dynamism and diversity in terms of the CSOs' cooperative connections. Yet it also shows variance between the publicgoods oriented Putnam-type CSOs and the special-interest oriented Olsontype CSOs in terms of their civic and political potential. This observed variance, in turn, is likely to influence their respective potential to articulate common interests on the one hand, to affect politics on the other hand. ; No sponsor
Generalized trust is important in democratic societies because it fosters co-operative norms which matter for citizen's-level activism. Individual's daily social interactions are among the significant determinants of generalized trust. Yet studies often measure social interactions at the group level such as those with the family, colleagues and the neighbors. Present study suggests that rather than group level relations, individual's both the structure- the extent of the weak and the strong ties-, and the content- whether they are mobilized for expressive action or instrumental action- of informal relations provide better explanations for generalized trust. Thus, the main objective of this study is to explore the relational foundations of generalized trust with individual level tie-based data. For this purpose, the study counts on International Social Science Program's (ISSP) survey of 2001 on social networks; hence the hypotheses are tested within a comparative cross-country perspective. The analysis suggests positive and significant influence of the kinship ties, which are mobilized for power and wealth and the non-kinship ties, which are mobilized for emotional support, on generalized trust. These findings, in turn, invite for a re-consideration of the conceptual discussion social capital literature posits between informal social relations and generalized trust. ; No sponsor
; Present study discusses citizen's perceptions and attitudes about environment in Turkey. For this purpose, it utilizes International Social Science Program's (ISSP) cross-country survey on environment, which was conducted in 2010 across thirty-one countries. The study's findings show that citizens of different demographic groups in Turkey mention similar concerns about the environment. Yet they also lack instituonal mechanisms to communicate these concerns to political actors. The study also underlines rural population's different perceptions and attitudes towards environmental issues in comparison with other demographic groups. Last but not the least, the comparison of the Turkish case with different countries highlights Germany as an important case study. ; No sponsor
This article aims to explain the slowing down of European Union (EU)–Turkish relations since the start of the accession negotiations in 2005 with international level systemic analysis. For this purpose, it examines the current challenges the new rising powers pose to the US-led unipolar international order and it shows how both the EU's and Turkey's responses to these challenges influence their relative powers as well as the negotiation process. By focusing on international level systemic dynamics, the article differs from the institutional explanations that explain EU–Turkish relations either with the utility-based logic of consequentialism or the norms-based logic of appropriateness. ; No sponsor
